No AI reads your journal
A journal is the last thing you want on someone else's server. In Memlow, entries are saved on your phone, or in your browser's storage on a computer, and Memlow's servers never receive them. There's no AI in Memlow at all, so nothing summarises your week, scores your mood or learns from what you wrote. The notes app sends no analytics about what you write either.
A diary with a lock
Memlow works as a journal with a lock, on your phone or your computer. Choose a PIN of 4 to 8 digits (4 to 6 on Android) and lock any entry from its menu. A locked entry shows only its title in your list and in search, and opening it asks for the PIN. To guard everything, turn on the app lock, and Memlow asks for the PIN each time it opens. On Android you can lock a whole folder, so a Journal folder keeps every entry in it locked, and unlock with your fingerprint.
A lock keeps out someone who borrows your phone. It doesn't encrypt the entry: the entry is stored like your other notes and protected by your phone's own security, so keep a screen lock on the phone too. Forgot the PIN? Show it's you with your fingerprint, backup password or Memlow account, and choose a new one without losing an entry. Lock notes and folders with a PIN has the steps.
Daily prompts and templates
A blank page is hard on a tired evening. Four templates give you somewhere to start:
- Daily journal: your mood, how you feel, what happened, three things you're grateful for and one thing for tomorrow, titled with today's date.
- Gratitude: three good things, someone you're thankful for and a small win.
- Weekly reflection: the best moment, what you learned, what drained you and next week's focus.
- Dream journal: the dream, how it felt and the people, places and signs in it.
Write one entry a day, or keep one long note per month. Save your own layout as a template and it's ready every evening.
Make it feel like a diary
Give the journal a look you want to come back to: the Morning pages or Sakura theme, lined paper, a handwriting font such as Caveat, and a sticker or two. Add a mood or a rating to an entry, a date that says "3 days ago", a countdown to an anniversary, a photo from the day, or a voice note when you'd rather talk than type. Every look is free; note themes shows them all.
Back it up so only you can read it
A journal kept on one phone can be lost with that phone. Turn on Google Drive backup and each backup is encrypted on your device with a password only you know, before it goes to a hidden folder in your own Drive. Google stores the file but can't read it, and neither can we. Or save a password-protected backup file and keep it on a computer. On the web, Version history keeps earlier versions of each entry, and you can export all your entries as Markdown files, or any one as a PDF, whenever you like.
