Folders, tags, pins and archive

On Android and on the webUpdated

To organise notes with folders and tags, put each note in one folder, such as Home, Work or a university course. Then add #tags for anything that cuts across folders, like #exams or #bills. Pin the notes you use every day to the top of Home, give notes a colour, and archive the ones you're done with. Archive keeps a note out of the way; Trash is for notes you want gone.

Folders

A folder holds the notes on one subject, and each folder has its own colour. A note is in one folder, or in none (No folder).

On Android

  1. Open Folders in the bar along the bottom and tap New folder.
  2. Type a Folder name, pick a colour and tap Create.

Home's Folder chip and the New folder choice when you move a note make one too. Press and hold a folder for Rename, Change colour, Move up, Move down, Lock folder and Delete folder.

On the web

  1. Open Folders and choose New folder. On a computer, the New folder button beside Folders in the sidebar works too, and so does the Folder chip on Home.
  2. Type a Name, pick a colour and choose Create.

To rename or delete a folder, open it and use its ⋯ menu (Folder options): Rename or recolour or Delete folder.

Put a note in a folder

  • In the note, tap the folder chip at the top, which shows the folder's name or No folder, and pick one.
  • Or open a card's ⋯ menu and choose Move to folder.
  • A new note you start inside a folder goes into that folder.

Delete a folder

On Android, Memlow asks what should happen to its notes: Move notes to No folder, or Delete notes too, which moves them to Trash. On the web, the folder goes and its notes stay, without a folder.

Tags

A tag is a word with # in front of it, typed anywhere in a note's title or text, such as #exams, #recipes or #ammi. There's no tag box: the note gets the tag as you type it. One note can have many tags.

  • A tag starts with a letter, and works in any script: #امتحان is a tag too.
  • #Work and #work are the same tag.
  • A # inside a web address or a code block isn't a tag.

Tags show as chips in the note. To see every note with a tag:

On Android

Open Folders: the Tags section lists each tag with how many notes have it. Tap one to see them in Search. In a note, tap a tag chip under the text. Press and hold a tag to Rename it in every note, or Delete it: the # comes off and the word stays.

On the web

On a computer, Tags in the sidebar lists your most used tags. On a phone, they're on the Folders page. Choose one to see its notes. In a note, Ctrl + click a tag (⌘ + click on a Mac). A quick note you write in a tag's view gets the tag.

Search finds tags too: use the Tag filter or Browse tags on Android, or type #exams in Search on the web. See Search your notes in any language.

Pins

A pinned note stays at the top of Home, under Pinned, until you unpin it. Tap the pin on the note's card, or in the note's top bar (Pin note on Android, Pin on the web). Home's Pinned chip shows only the pinned ones.

Colours

Twelve colours tint a note and its card on Home. Use the card's ⋯ menu (Change colour on Android, Colour on the web), or Style in the note, then Colour. Search can filter by colour, too, and Home can be sorted by it (see Sort notes and show them as a grid or a list). On Android, the colour new notes start with is in Settings, then Notes, then Default note colour.

Archive

Archive takes a finished note off Home and keeps it, still searchable: last term's lecture notes, a trip you're back from, paid bills.

  1. Open the card's ⋯ menu, or the note's own menu, and choose Archive. On Android, in the list layout, you can also swipe a card sideways.
  2. Memlow says it's archived, with Undo.

To find archived notes, open Folders, then Archive. On a computer, Archive is in the sidebar too. To put a note back on Home, choose Unarchive.

Archive and Trash do different jobs. Archive keeps a note for as long as you like. Trash holds a deleted note for 30 days, then it's gone for good: Recover deleted notes from Trash.

Work on several notes at once

Press and hold a card to start selecting, then tap more cards. On a computer, Ctrl + click the cards instead, or choose Select in a card's ⋯ menu. The bar at the top can pin them, change their colour, move them to a folder, archive them or move them to Trash.

Keep a folder or note private

You can lock a note with a PIN in both apps, and a whole folder on Android. A locked note shows only its title until the PIN is entered. The lock is an access gate inside Memlow, not encryption. See Lock notes and folders with a PIN.

Questions and answers

How do I make a folder?

Open Folders and choose New folder, then give it a name and a colour and choose Create. Move a note in with the folder chip at the top of the note.

How do #tags work?

Type # and a word anywhere in a note, such as #exams. The note gets the tag straight away. Tags are listed under Folders, and in the sidebar on a computer.

What's the difference between Archive and Trash?

Archive takes a note off Home and keeps it, still searchable, for as long as you like. Trash holds a deleted note for 30 days, then deletes it for good.
