This budget spreadsheet lists the month's categories, from rent to eating out, with what you planned to spend and what you spent. It works out what's left in each one and the share you've used, totals the lot, and charts planned against spent.

What’s inside

  • Nine categories to start: rent and housing, groceries, transport, bills, phone and internet, eating out, health, savings and other.
  • Planned and Spent columns in your own currency, and a Left column worked out for each category.
  • A Used column with the share of each budget spent, and a Total row that adds everything up.
  • Left turns red and bold below zero, and Used turns red over 100%, so overspending stands out.
  • A column chart of planned against spent for every category.

Tips for using it

  1. Set it up in five minutes: rename the categories to fit your life, fill in Planned at the start of the month, then update Spent once a week.
  2. Start a new tab each month (or each week, if you're paid weekly), so last month's figures stay as they were.
  3. Log each purchase in the expense log note, then copy the week's totals here.

Questions

What should a budget spreadsheet include?

Your spending categories, what you plan for each, what you spend, and what's left. This one does all four, with a total row and a chart.

Does it track income?

Not as it comes: it's a spending budget. Add a row for income above the categories if you want to see what's left of your pay.

Can I use it weekly instead of monthly?

Yes. The categories and formulas don't care about the period. Start a tab per week and plan smaller amounts.

Does it connect to my bank?

No. You type the amounts yourself, and they stay on your device or in your own encrypted backups.
