Why back up at all

Memlow keeps notes on your device, and that's what makes it private. It also means a lost phone, a factory reset or cleared browser data could take your notes with it. A backup is the safety net, and Memlow has two, both free: Google Drive backup, and backup files you keep yourself.

How Google Drive backup works

  1. Link Google Drive and choose your Google account: Settings → Storage and Google Drive on the web (signed in to your free Memlow account), Settings → Google Drive backup on Android.
  2. Create a backup password of at least 8 characters.
  3. Memlow encrypts each backup on your device with that password, then uploads it to its hidden app folder in your Drive. Google stores the file but can't read the notes inside, and neither can we.

On Android, choose daily, weekly or only when you tap Back up now, and keep backups to Wi-Fi if you like; Memlow keeps the three newest. On the web, Memlow backs up while it's connected to your Drive, whenever something has changed, at most every 15 minutes. The web's Google sign-in isn't kept: it lasts about an hour and ends when you reload or reopen the page. After that, one tap on Reconnect links it again. Backups include your photos and voice recordings too.

One password, kept by you

Encryption only protects you if nobody else holds the key. Your backup password never reaches us, which is exactly why we can't recover it. Pick one you'll remember and write it down somewhere safe, away from your phone. Keeping it only inside Memlow doesn't help if the device is gone.

Backup files work the same way. A .memlow file holds every note, photo and voice note, and it's password-protected by default. Keep one on a computer or a USB stick as a second copy, with no internet needed.

The same backups on the web and on Android

The Android app and app.memlow.com read and write the same backup format. Link both to the same Google account with the same backup password. While app.memlow.com is connected to your Drive, it brings in the phone's newer notes; after you reopen it, one tap on Reconnect links it again. To bring the web's notes to your phone, open Settings → Restore from a backup → Google Drive in the app and choose Merge, which keeps the newer copy of each note. Here's how phone and computer work together, step by step.

Restore on a new device

On a new phone, install Memlow and tap Restore from a backup on the welcome screen. On a new computer, open app.memlow.com, sign in to your Memlow account and link Google Drive. Enter your backup password, then choose Replace to match the backup exactly, or Merge to keep what's already there. On Android, Memlow keeps a safety copy first.

Want to start over? Delete Drive backups in Settings removes every Memlow backup from your Drive. Support has more help with backups and new phones.

Privacy, in plain words

Your notes stay yours.

No adjectives, just how it works. Memlow has no server that stores notes, so there is nothing of yours for us to read, sell or lose.

Read the privacy policy

Where notes live
On your device: the phone's storage, or your browser's own storage on the web.
Accounts
A Memlow account never holds your notes. It keeps only your name, email and how you sign in.
Backups
Optional, in your own Google Drive or a file, encrypted on your device with your password (AES-256-GCM) before they leave it.
Who can read them
Only you. Not Google, not us. That also means we can't recover a lost backup password.
Visits and AI
The website counts visits without cookies or IDs, and the notes app sends nothing. No AI reads your notes. The Android app shows a few ads, which never see your notes.
Questions

Good to know

Something else? See Support or write to support@memlow.com.

Can Google read my notes in Drive?

No. Each backup is encrypted on your device with your backup password before it uploads. Google stores the file but can't read the notes inside.

Can Memlow see my other Google Drive files?

No. Memlow only uses its own hidden app folder in your Drive, and can't see anything else there.

What if I forget my backup password?

We can't recover it, because we never have it. Without it a backup can't be opened, so keep it written down somewhere safe.

Does Drive backup cost anything?

No. It's free in Memlow for everyone. Backups are stored in your own Google Drive, so they use a little of your Drive space.

Is this the same as live sync?

No. Memlow makes encrypted backups and brings in newer notes from them, rather than copying every keystroke. On the web it backs up at most every 15 minutes while it's connected to your Drive.

Your notes stay yours.

Memlow is free and private, with no AI. Start writing in your browser, or get the Android app.
